Spatial Modelling of Flood Risk and Flood Hazards

    Springer, 2023, 2022 ed., 238 Seiten, ISBN 9783030945466
Floods and flash floods with hydro-meteorological and tropical cyclones are the some of the most devastating natural disasters causing massive damages to natural and man-made features. Flood hazards are a major threat to human life, properties (agricultural area, yield production, building and homes) and infrastructures (bridges, roads, railways, urban infrastructures, etc). Flood hazards susceptibility mapping (risk assessment) and modelling is an essential step for early warning systems, emergency services, prevention and mitigation of future environmental and social hazards and implementation of risk management strategies. Due to the lack of proper information, technology-based policies and strategies, mapping and modelling can often not be implemented to the best possible level. Geo-spatial techniques have enjoyed rising interest in recent decades among the earth environmental and social sciences research communities for their powerful ability to solve and understand various complex problems and develop novel approaches toward sustainable earth and human society. By linking geo-spatial computational intelligence techniques with societal and environmental-oriented problems, this book demonstrates geospatial technology approaches to data mining techniques, data analysis, modelling, risk assessment and visualization and management strategies in different aspects of flood hazards. We believe that a diverse group of academics, scientists, geographers, hydrologist, remote sensing and GIS expertise, environmentalists, meteorologists and computing experts with a common interest in geospatial sciences within the earth environmental sciences and humanistic and social sciences will find this book to be of great value.

Impact of Climate Change, Land Use and Land Cover, and Socio-economic Dynamics on Landslides

    Springer, 2023, 1st ed. 2022, 491 Seiten, ISBN 9789811673160
This book discusses the impact of climate change, land use and land cover, and socio-economic dynamics on landslides in Asian countries. Scholars recently have brought about a shift in their focus regarding triggering factors for landslides, from rainfall or earthquake to claiming rapid urbanization, extreme population pressure, improper land use planning, illegal hill cutting for settlements and indiscriminate deforestation. This suggests that the occurrence or probabilities of landslides are shaped by both climate-related and non-climate-related anthropogenic factors. Among these issues, land use and land cover change or improper land use planning is one of the key factors. Further climate change shapes the rainfall pattern and intensity in different parts of the world, and consequently rainfall-triggered landslides have increased. These changes cause socio-economic changes. Conversely, socio-economic and lifestyle changes enhance inappropriate land use and climate change. All these changes in land use, climate and socio-economic aspects are dynamics in nature and shape landslide risks in Asian countries, where they are given serious attention by governments, disaster management professionals, researchers and academicians. This book comprises 21 chapters divided into three major sections highlighting the effect of climate change on landslide incidence with the influence on vegetation and socio-economic aspects. The sections address how climate change and extreme events have triggered landslides. The advances in geospatial techniques with the focus on land use and land cover change along with the effect on socio-economic aspects are also explored.

Climate Events and Disaster Mitigation from Policy to Practice

Daya Pub. House, 2018, 278 Seiten, ISBN 9789387057272
'Climate Change' is a matter of great concern at the global level since it is leading to causing weather-related disasters and in making communities more vulnerable to the effects of disasters. There is need for disaster mitigation measures to reduce or if possible, totally eliminate the impacts and risks of hazards through proactive measures taken before an emergency or disaster occurs. For alleviating the risk of disaster due to severe climate events, there has been a growing need for a concrete platform to educate and train the individuals and entities in the developing world and network with them to act beyond the disaster management policies. Keeping this in view, the NAM S&T Centre in partnership with the National Science & Technology Commission (NASTEC) of Sri Lanka organised an international workshop on 'Mitigation of Disasters due to Severe Climate Events: From Policy to Practice' in Colombo, Sri Lanka during 10-13 March 2016. The workshop was attended by 64 senior professionals from 19 countries - Cambodia, Egypt, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Thailand, Uganda, Venezuela, Zambia and Zimbabwe, and the host country Sri Lanka for sharing views and experiences for the development of a road map for reducing the risks in real situations. The present book edited by Prof. Joaquin Alejandro Linayo Rivero, Prof. Jayant K. Routray and Prof. Biswajeet Pradhan is a follow up of the Colombo Workshop comprising 17 scientific and technical papers contributed by the experts from 15 countries. The book is expected to be useful to all those associated with mitigation of disasters due to severe climate events, from researchers to policy makers, non government organisations and government officials in the developing countries.

    Terrigenous Mass Movements

    Springer, 2014, 2012 ed., 400 Seiten, ISBN 9783642427787
Terrestrial mass movements (i.e. cliff collapses, soil creeps, mudflows, landslides etc.) are severe forms of natural disasters mostly occurring in mountainous terrain, which is subjected to specific geological, geomorphological and climatological conditions, as well as to human activities. It is a challenging task to accurately define the position, type and activity of mass movements for the purpose of creating inventory records and potential vulnerability maps. Remote sensing techniques, in combination with Geographic Information System tools, allow state-of-the-art investigation of the degree of potential mass movements and modeling surface processes for hazard and risk mapping. Similarly, through statistical prediction models, future mass-movement-prone areas can be identified and damages can to a certain extent be minimized. Issues of scale and selection of morphological attributes for the scientific analysis of mass movements call for new developments in data modeling and spatio-temporal GIS analysis. The book is a product of a cooperation between the editors and several contributing authors, addressing current issues and recent developments in GI technology and mass movements research. Its fundamental treatment of this technology includes data modeling, topography, geology, geomorphology, remote sensing, artificial neural networks, binomial regression, fuzzy logic, spatial statistics and analysis, and scientific visualization. Both theoretical and practical issues are addressed.
