Heyne, 2025, Deutsche Erstausgabe, 432 Seiten, ISBN 9783453427280

    Young Children Visit Museums
Carr, Margaret; Soutar, Brenda; Clayton, Leanne; Cowie, Bronwen; Clarkin-Phillips, Jeanette; Butler, Shelley
    Routledge, 2024, 1. Auflage, 110 Seiten, ISBN 9781032322520
Bringing different cultural perspectives on creativity with them, teachers and children in two early childhood education sites in Aotearoa New Zealand were using museum visits as jumping off places to hone their creative capacity building. As a contribution to Tim Ingold's discussion of anthropology and/as education, and also finding John Dewey's writing valuable (specifically his framing of 'enduring attitudes'), the authors employ a navigation metaphor throughout the discussion. They describe a coming together of four Cultural Anchors (thinking from materials) with four Coordinates (creative capacity builders) to describe ways in which the children were making creative sense of the museum exhibits, while at the same time gathering information about them. They take these travel metaphors from a star cluster in the southern hemisphere night sky, Matariki, which provided early sea-going Maori with guidance as they navigated wide stretches of ocean in their sea-going canoes to reach Aotearoa New Zealand. A Maori immersion early childhood centre and school, and a New Zealand kindergarten provided lively examples of children's and teachers' responses to the treasured artefacts (taonga) in their local museums. The book describes an ecosocial framing, from 'little to big', and illustrates the different cultural perspectives on creativity. The Mana Tamariki kaiako (teachers) gifted us a title-He taonga, he rerenga arorangi (Where there are treasured objects, the spirit is nurtured and creativity will be inspired).

    English Historical Linguistics

John Benjamins Publishing Co, 2022, 349 Seiten, ISBN 9789027210647
This volume contains a set of articles based on papers selected from those delivered at the 20th International Conference on English Historical Linguistics (ICEHL, Edinburgh 2018). It focuses on cutting-edge research in the history of English, while reflecting the diversity that exists in the current landscape of English historical linguistics. Chapters showcase traditional as well as novel methodologies in historical linguistics (the latter made possible by the increasing quality and accessibility of digital tools), work on linguistic interfaces (between segmental phonology and prosody, and syntax and information structure) and work on mechanisms of language change (such as Yang's Tolerance Principle, on the threshold for the productivity of linguistic rules in language acquisition). The volume will be of interest to those working on the historical phonology, morphology, syntax and pragmatics of English, language change, corpus linguistics, computational historical linguistics, and related sub-disciplines.

    Bibliopegia
    Arnett, John Andrews
    Routledge, 2020, 1. Auflage, 254 Seiten, ISBN 9780367141325
Originally published in 1938, Arnett's Bibliopegia was one of the first manuals of bookbinding to be published in Britain, and is both more significant than the Cowie manual before it, and illustrated. Bibliopegia appeared at a time of immense changes in the structure of the trade which were brought about by the introduction of new techniques and equipment, and this in turn was precipitated by the rapid evolution of industry and society in general. This book provides an interesting insight into early nineteenth-century English binding practices.

    Freshwater Mollusks of the World

Johns Hopkins University Press, 2019, 256 Seiten, ISBN 9781421427317
The definitive resource on the biology and evolution of freshwater mollusks. There are more species of freshwater mollusks-well over 5,000-than all the mammal species of the world. Freshwater mollusks are also arguably the most endangered fauna on the planet. Yet few references exist for researchers, shell enthusiasts, and general readers who are interested in learning more about these fascinating creatures. In Freshwater Mollusks of the World, Charles Lydeard and Kevin S. Cummings fill that void with contributions from dozens of renowned mollusk experts.Touching on 34 families of freshwater gastropods (snails) and 9 families of freshwater bivalves (mussels and clams), each chapter provides a synthesis of the latest research on the diversity and evolutionary relationships of the family. The book also includes* a look at how evolving DNA sequencing data techniques help shed light on mollusk taxonomy* distribution maps of each family's biogeographic locales* a representative photo and distribution map for each of the freshwater mollusk families * the latest information on each family's conservation status-and how to reverse the habitat destruction, modification, and pollution that threatens it* a discussion of the ecological and economic damages caused by invasive mollusk species, as well as their role as disease vectorsMollusks provide us with amazing biogeographical insights: their ancient fossil record goes back over 500 million years, and their distribution patterns are a reflection of past continental and climate changes. The only comprehensive summary of systematic and biodiversity information on freshwater mollusk families throughout the world, this reference is a must for malacologists, limnologists, ichthyologists, stream ecologists, biogeographers, and conservation biologists.Contributors: Christian Albrecht, Ruediger Bieler, Bert Van Bocxlaer, David C. The First Century of English Monolingual Lexicography
    Miyoshi, Kusujiro
Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2017, Unabridged edition, 180 Seiten, ISBN 9781443851817
This book deals with monolingual English dictionaries from 1604 to 1702. The major scholarly reference works which individually treat early English dictionaries are De Witt Starnes and Gertrude Noyes's English Dictionary from Cawdrey to Johnson: 1604-1755 (1946) and The Oxford History of English Lexicography (2009) edited by A. P. Cowie. However, when we proceed with reading the dictionaries with primary attention to their provision of lexical information, an array of deficiencies in Starnes and Noyes's account stands out. There are two main reasons for these deficiencies; one is the fact that Starnes and Noyes's analyses of the dictionaries are mainly made in accordance with the contents of their title pages and introductory materials, and the other is that the two authorities are excessively conscious of the external history of the dictionaries they discuss. The method of investigation of the dictionaries in this book differs greatly from these previous studies. Through it, various facts, which have been unnoticed for centuries, come to be revealed, including not only an array of historically significant methods for the lexical treatment of words and phrases, but also the highly creative use of other dictionaries in one specific dictionary, as well as the previously unrecognized direct and indirect influence of one dictionary on others. This book deals with monolingual English dictionaries from 1604 to 1702. Recording Reality, Desiring the Real
    Cowie, Elizabeth
University of Minnesota Press, 2011, 296 Seiten, ISBN 9780816645480
Documentary has once again emerged as one of the most vital cultural forms, whether seen in cinemas or inside the home, as digital, film, or video. In Recording Reality, Desiring the Real, Elizabeth Cowie looks at the history of documentary and its contemporary forms, showing how it has been simultaneously understood as factual, as story, as art, and as political, addressing the seeming paradox between the pleasures of spectacle in the documentary and its project of informing and educating. Cowie claims that, as a radical film form, documentary has been a way for filmmakers to acknowledge historical and contemporary realities by presenting images of these realities. If documentary is the desire to know reality through its images and sounds, she asks, what kind of speaking (and speaking about) emerges in documentary, and how are we engaged by it? In considering this and other questions, Cowie examines a range of noteworthy films, including Spike Lee's When the Levees Broke, John Huston's Let There Be Light, and Milica Tomic's Portrait of My Mother.Recording Reality, Desiring the Real stakes documentary's central place in cinema as both an art form and a form of social engagement, which together create a new understanding of spectatorship.
